Xcell Therapeutics Publishes Media Comparison Paper..."Differences in Safety Among Cell Culture Media"

A study has shown that the type of medium (cell food) used for cell culture, which is essential for cell therapy, affects safety.

Xcell Therapeutics, a leading domestic medium company, announced on the 13th that a paper comparing the characteristics of cells cultured in SFD medium (serum-free medium) and FBS medium (bovine fetal serum) for mesenchymal stem cell culture developed by the company has been approved for publication in Scientific Reports, a sister journal of Nature, an SCI-level international journal.

The paper compares cells cultured in serum-free medium (CellCorTM SFD MSC) developed by Xcell Therapeutics with cells cultured in FBS medium. The results of the comparison of culturability, cellular senescence, immunogenicity, and genetic stability showed that the gene and protein expression of cells can vary depending on the medium used for culture.

According to the company, the results of the paper will have significant implications for the "stability and safety" of media containing animal-derived products, which has been an ongoing issue in academia and industry.

"In order for the advanced regenerative medicine and advanced biopharmaceutical industries to take a leap forward, it is essential to secure media that can guarantee 'safety' above all else," said Dr. Lee Ju-yeon, head of Xcell Therapeutics' research center, who led the paper. "Xcell Therapeutics will continue to strive to develop safe media."

Xcell Therapeutics also plans to publish a paper comparing chemically prepared serum-free media (CD), a step up from the serum-free media used in this paper, to conventional media.
